She attended the University of New Mexico and Virginia Commonwealth University, where she earned a Bachelors and Masters degree in Sociology and focused on issues relating to race, class, and gender. She also earned graduate certificates in Instructional Systems Development and Instructional Technology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus, an honors university. Her hobbies include hiking and camping, playing bass guitar, and taking long walks with her family.
