Due to the changing work force, HR and operational policy and procedure need to be written and reviewed every couple of years. Participants will learn how to draft a clear and concise policy and procedure manual designed for Tribes and Tribal enterprises. We will discuss current legal issues and best practices that both honor Tribal Sovereignty and keep the organization healthy and safe. In this session we will discuss several topics:
- Tribal law updates & how they affect Indian Country
- Balancing Sovereignty, federal & state employment laws, and best practices
This practical course will be offered in two different forms:
1) a self-paced course that you can view on your own time, and that provides you with the foundations you’ll need to draft or revise a policy and procedure manual; and
2) an interactive Master Class paced out over a number of weeks, where we’ll focus in on a different facet of policy-writing each week. This course is project-based: at the beginning of course you’ll pick one policy or procedure that you’d like to draft or revise, and over the duration of the course you’ll use what you learn in class to complete it. Students who feel comfortable sharing their policy will be able to receive feedback from the instructor and fellow students.
Please note that this class does not offer legal advice, and you should clear your policy with your tribal lawyer before implementing it.
When you sign up to express your interest in the course, we’ll follow up with you to ask you which version(s) of the course you’re interested in, and let you know when the course is open for enrollment.
